Perfectly crunchy on the outside and tender inside, these bites make an irresistible savory snack for parties, game nights, or any occasion where you want a satisfying treat with bold flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

Onions

  • 2 large sweet onions (such as Vidalia or Walla Walla)

Batter & Coating

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup seasoned bread crumbs
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk or buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

For Frying

  • Oil with a high smoke point (such as vegetable, canola, or peanut oil), enough for deep frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Onions: Peel the onions and slice them into thick rings or ‘blossoms,’ carefully separating the petals without breaking them. Pat them dry to help the batter stick better and avoid sogginess.
  2. Make the Batter: In a bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk or buttermilk until smooth. In another bowl, combine flour, seasoned bread crumbs, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper to create the seasoned coating mixture.
  3. Coat the Onion Blossoms: Dip each onion blossom into the egg mixture, making sure the batter reaches every crevice. Then dredge thoroughly in the flour and bread crumb mixture, pressing gently for an even, thick coating. For extra crunch, you may double dip by repeating the dipping process.
  4. Fry to Crispy Perfection: Heat oil in a deep pan or fryer to 350°F (175°C). Carefully lower coated onion blossoms into the hot oil in small batches to maintain temperature. Fry for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  5. Serve Warm: Serve your Awesome Blossom Onion Bites immediately while hot and crispy, accompanied by your favorite dipping sauces such as ranch, barbecue, or spicy aioli.

Notes

  • Pat onions dry before coating to ensure batter adheres well and prevent sogginess.
  • Maintain oil temperature consistently between 350°F to 360°F for even frying.
  • For extra crunch, consider double dipping the onion blossoms in batter and breading.
  • Do not overcrowd the frying pan; fry in small batches to prevent oil temperature from dropping and keep bites crispy.
  • Best enjoyed hot to preserve their crispy texture.
