Ingredients

Scale

For the Donuts:

  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon red food coloring

For the Cream Cheese Glaze:

  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk (more if needed for desired consistency)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

To Garnish:

  • Valentine’s Day sprinkles
  • Heart-shaped donut pan

Instructions

  • Preheat and Prep:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Lightly grease the heart-shaped donut pan with non-stick spray or butter.
  • Mix the Dry Ingredients:
    • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
  • Mix the Wet Ingredients:
    • In a separate bowl, combine the buttermilk, melted butter, egg, vanilla extract, and red food coloring.
  • Combine and Fill:
    • Gradually add the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined (do not overmix).
    • Spoon or pipe the batter into the heart-shaped donut pan, filling each cavity about 3/4 full.
  • Bake:
    • Bake the donuts in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
    • Let the donuts cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Make the Cream Cheese Glaze:
    • In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth.
    • Gradually add the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract, mixing until the glaze is smooth and pourable. Add more milk if needed to adjust the consistency.
  • Decorate the Donuts:
    • Dip the cooled donuts into the cream cheese glaze, allowing any excess to drip off.
    • Place the donuts back on the wire rack and immediately sprinkle with Valentine’s Day sprinkles for a festive touch.

Notes

  • If you don’t have a heart-shaped donut pan, a regular donut pan works just as well.
  • You can also use gel food coloring for a more vibrant red hue.
  • Store the donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2-3 days.
