Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (500 g) ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1 onion, finely diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/3 cup Panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup tomato sauce (marinara)
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Salt, to taste
  • For the Mushroom Gravy:
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 9 oz (250 g) white button mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 1/2 cups low sodium beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch mixed with 1/4 cup water (or beef stock)
  • Salt and pepper, as needed

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a skillet over medium heat, sauté the diced onion until translucent, about 4 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for another minute, then remove from heat and let cool slightly. In a large bowl, combine the cooled onion mixture with ground beef, Panko breadcrumbs, egg, tomato sauce, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, oregano, black pepper, and salt. Mix until just combined, then form the mixture into 4-5 oval patties.
  2. Cook the Patties: Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in the same skillet. Brown the patties over medium heat, about 1 minute per side. Transfer the patties to a plate (they won’t be fully cooked yet).
  3. Prepare the Mushroom Gravy: In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and cook until softened, about 3 minutes. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook until browned and tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in the beef broth, onion powder, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for a few minutes to develop flavor.
  4. Thicken the Gravy: Add the cornstarch and water (or beef stock) mixture to the gravy, stirring constantly until the gravy thickens, about 2-3 minutes. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Combine Patties and Gravy: Return the patties to the skillet, spoon some gravy over them, and simmer for about 10-12 minutes, until the patties are fully cooked and the gravy has thickened to your desired consistency.
  6. Serve: Serve the Salisbury steaks with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite side dish, and enjoy!

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can use beef stock instead of water to mix with the cornstarch.
  • You can substitute the white button mushrooms with cremini or portobello mushrooms for a deeper, earthier flavor.
