Whether you’re hosting a game night or just enjoying a simple snack, this cheesy sauce is sure to be a hit!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk (or heavy cream for a richer sauce)
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • A pinch of garlic powder (optional)
  • A pinch of cayenne pepper (optional, for some heat)

Instructions

  • Make a Roux: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk continuously for about 1-2 minutes until the mixture is smooth and slightly bubbly. This will help thicken the sauce.
  • Add Milk: Slowly pour in the milk while whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Continue to cook for about 3-5 minutes, stirring often, until the mixture thickens.
  • Melt the Cheese: Lower the heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese. Continue stirring until the cheese has melted completely and the sauce is smooth.
  • Season: Season the cheese sauce with salt and pepper to taste. If you want a bit of extra flavor, you can add garlic powder and cayenne pepper at this stage.
  • Serve: Pour the cheese sauce over hot fries or serve it as a dipping sauce. Enjoy!

Notes

  • You can substitute the cheddar with any cheese you prefer, such as mozzarella or American cheese, for different flavors.
  • For a spicier kick, add a few dashes of hot sauce or a bit more cayenne pepper.
  • For a smoother texture, blend the sauce if needed.
