Ingredients

Scale

Bread Base

  • 1 sturdy loaf of French bread or sourdough (about 12 inches)

Cheese Blend

  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Pickles

  • 1 cup thinly sliced dill pickles or bread-and-butter pickles

Butter Spread

  • 4 tablespoons softened butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • Pinch of smoked paprika (optional)
  • Pinch of black pepper (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Slice the loaf horizontally, creating two even halves without cutting all the way through the bottom, forming a “boat” shape that will hold the filling securely.
  2. Make the Butter Spread: In a small bowl, mix softened butter with minced garlic, chopped parsley, and optional smoked paprika and black pepper until combined well. This will add richness and help the bread crisp.
  3. Layer the Cheese and Pickles: Generously spread the butter mixture inside the hollowed bread “boat.” Then evenly layer the shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheeses over the spread. Top the cheese layers with thinly sliced pickles, distributing them evenly to ensure tangy bites throughout.
  4. Bake to Perfection: Place the stuffed bread on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 15-20 minutes or until the cheese is bubbling and the crust turns golden brown and crispy.
  5. Serve Warm: Remove from oven and let the bread cool for a few minutes before slicing into pieces. Serving warm keeps the cheese melty and the bread crispy for the best eating experience.

Notes

  • Choose a firm loaf like French bread or sourdough to prevent sogginess.
  • Use sharp cheddar for a flavorful balance with the tangy pickles.
  • Do not overload with pickles to avoid a soggy texture.
  • Preheat the oven to ensure even baking and a crisp crust.
  • Allow the bread to rest slightly after baking to maintain its structure and flavor.
