Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups apples, peeled and diced
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Set your saucepan or skillet over medium heat to preheat.
- Add apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and water into the pan. Stir gently to mix everything together.
- Let the mixture come to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugars evenly.
- Stir in the cornstarch and continue to cook until the sauce starts to thicken.
- Add the butter and vanilla extract. Keep cooking and stirring for another 5 to 7 minutes until the apples are tender and the mixture becomes glossy and thick.
- Taste and adjust sweetness or spices if needed. Let it cool slightly before using or storing.
Notes
- Mix different apple varieties for a more complex flavor.
- Adjust sugar levels depending on the sweetness of your apples.
- For longer storage, freeze the filling in airtight containers for up to 3 months.
- Try adding a splash of maple syrup for extra depth.
