A Classic Patty Melt is a deliciously indulgent sandwich made with juicy beef patties, melted cheese, and a tangy sauce, all nestled between buttery, toasted rye bread. Perfect for a hearty lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices rye bread
  • 6 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 3/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon sweet relish
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 6 slices cheddar cheese
  • 6 slices provolone cheese

Instructions

  • Prep the Bread:
Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. Set aside.
  • Make the Patties:
Mix the ground beef with pepper, salt, and onion powder. Shape into 3 patties.
  • Cook the Patties:
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 2-3 minutes per side, then reduce heat to low and cook until fully done (160°F inside).
  • Make the Sauce:
In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet relish, and sugar. Set aside.
  • Assemble the Patty Melts:
Heat another skillet on medium-low. Place buttered bread (butter-side down) in the skillet. Layer with 2 slices of cheddar, a patty, and 2 slices of provolone. Spread sauce on the unbuttered side of another slice of bread, then place it sauce-side down on top of the cheese.
  • Cook:
Toast each side for 2-3 minutes until golden brown. Repeat for all patty melts.
  • Serve and Enjoy:
Serve the patty melts warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • You can customize the cheese options with Swiss or American cheese.
  • For extra flavor, add caramelized onions or sautéed mushrooms.
