This homemade Country Gravy Mix is a versatile staple for your kitchen, loved by families for its rich and creamy texture. With just a few simple ingredients, you can make a delicious gravy for mashed potatoes, biscuits, rice, or even sausage gravy! The mix is easy to store and lasts for months, ensuring you always have a go-to for your favorite comfort food.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup dry milk powder
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning

Instructions

  • Prepare the Gravy Mix:
In a large bowl, whisk together all the ingredients: flour, dry milk powder, cornstarch, black pepper, salt, onion powder, and poultry seasoning. Store the mix in an airtight container like a mason jar. It will last up to 6 months.
  • Making the Gravy:
    • Melt 2 tablespoons of fat (butter, shortening, sausage fat, or bacon grease) in a saucepan over medium-low heat.
    • Add 3 tablespoons of the gravy mix to the pan and cook, stirring constantly, for 3 minutes to create a roux.
  • Add Liquid:
Slowly pour in 1 cup of water or milk (milk will create a creamier gravy). Whisk well and cook until the gravy thickens.
  • Optional Addition:
For sausage gravy, add browned sausage to the mixture and stir until combined.
  • Serve:
Pour the gravy over your favorite dishes, such as mashed potatoes, biscuits, or rice. Enjoy!

Notes

  • This gravy mix is extremely customizable. Feel free to add more seasonings to suit your tastes, like garlic powder or cayenne pepper for a bit of heat.
  • For a heartier gravy, try adding crumbled sausage after the roux has thickened.
