These I-Love-You Scones are as adorable as they are delicious. With a burst of fruity preserves in the center and a hint of almond flavor, they’re the perfect treat to show your love on Valentine’s Day (or any day)!

Ingredients

  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup applesauce
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds
  • 23 tablespoons strawberry or raspberry preserves
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Dough: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, applesauce, melted butter, and almond extract until well combined.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, mix the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until a soft dough forms.
  • Add Almonds: Fold in the sliced almonds.
  • Shape the Scones: Lightly flour your hands and work surface. Pat the dough out to a 1/2-inch thickness. Using the back of a spoon dipped in flour, pat portions of the dough into heart shapes directly onto the prepared baking sheet. Use your thumb or the back of a small spoon to create a shallow well in the center of each heart.
  • Add the Filling: Place 1/2 teaspoon of strawberry or raspberry preserves into each well.
  • Bake the Scones: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  • Cool and Garnish: Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Dust with powdered sugar for a sweet finishing touch. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Use strawberry or raspberry preserves based on your preference or what you have on hand.
  • For an extra touch, you can also drizzle a little icing over the scones!
