  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning, divided
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 package Sloppy Joes seasoning mix
  • 1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 4 (6-inch) submarine rolls
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, garlic salt, 3/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning, and pepper. Shape into 16 (1 1/2-inch) meatballs.
  3. Brown meatballs in a large skillet over medium heat for 10 minutes or until cooked through.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix Sloppy Joes seasoning mix, tomato paste, water, and remaining 1/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning until smooth.
  5. Add the seasoning mixture to the skillet with meatballs. Stir to coat and simmer for 5 minutes.
  6. Place meatballs in the submarine rolls. Spoon sauce over meatballs and top with shredded mozzarella cheese.
  7. Place sandwiches on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add a few dashes of hot sauce to the Sloppy Joe mixture.
  • Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
  • Leftover meatballs can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
