This Southern Chocolate Cobbler is an old-fashioned dessert with a brownie-like cake on top and a gooey, fudgy chocolate sauce underneath. It’s simple to whip up and perfect served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Like a chocolate lava cake’s nostalgic Southern cousin!

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Batter:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For the Topping:
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cups boiling water

Instructions

  1. Preheat & Prepare Dish: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish and set aside.
  2. Mix the Batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, granulated sugar, and 2 tablespoons cocoa powder. Stir in milk, melted butter, and vanilla until smooth. Pour batter into the prepared baking dish.
  3. Add the Topping: Evenly sprinkle the brown sugar and 1/4 cup cocoa powder over the batter. Do not stir.
  4. Pour Boiling Water: Slowly and carefully pour the boiling water over the entire dish—again, do not stir.
  5. Bake: Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes or until the top looks set and firm, and a rich chocolate sauce has formed underneath.
  6. Serve: Let cool slightly before serving. Spoon into bowls and serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

  • For an extra flavor boost, add a pinch of cinnamon to the dry batter mix.
  • This dessert is best enjoyed fresh out of the oven while it’s still warm and saucy.
  • If doubling the recipe, use a 9×13-inch baking dish and add a few extra minutes to the baking time.
