Tennessee Onions is a Southern-style baked side dish made with sweet Vidalia onions, rich butter, and a blend of cheeses. It’s savory, cheesy, and perfect for holiday gatherings or everyday meals.

  • 3 large sweet onions (e.g., Vidalia), peeled and sliced into 1/4-inch rings
  • 4 tablespoons butter, cut into small pats
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried mustard powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Arrange half of the onion slices in the dish.
  3. Sprinkle half of the garlic powder, oregano, parsley, thyme, mustard powder, cayenne pepper, and garlic salt.
  4. Dot with half of the butter pats.
  5. Top with half of the cheddar, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheeses.
  6. Repeat the layering with remaining ingredients.
  7. Cover with foil and bake for 35 minutes.
  8. Remove foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden.

Notes

  • Separate onion rings for even cooking.
  • Increase cayenne pepper for added heat.
  • Substitute Vidalia onions with other sweet varieties if unavailable.
  • Serve as a side, condiment, or burger topping.
