Ingredients

Scale

For the Chocolate Pie Dough:

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (281g), spooned & leveled
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (21g)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (24g)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup cold unsalted butter (226g), cubed
  • 1/2 cup cold milk or heavy cream (120ml)

For the Chocolate Filling:

  • 4 ounces semi-sweet chocolate (113g), chopped
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (120ml)
  • 2 tablespoons creamy peanut butter (31g, optional)

For the Topping:

  • 2 ounces semi-sweet chocolate (57g), chopped
  • 1 teaspoon canola or vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon peanut butter (16g, optional)

For Assembly:

  • 1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon milk (for egg wash)
  • 2 tablespoons coarse sugar for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the Dough: In a food processor, pulse the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, salt, and cold butter until the mixture becomes crumbly. Gradually add the cold milk until a dough forms. Divide the dough into two portions, wrap them in plastic, and chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours.

  2. Prepare the Filling: Once the dough is chilling, pour hot heavy cream over the chopped semi-sweet chocolate. Stir until smooth. If using, add the peanut butter and stir until combined. Let the filling cool for 15 minutes until it thickens.

  3. Roll and Cut the Dough: Once the dough has chilled, roll it out on a floured surface. Using a heart-shaped cutter, cut the dough into 3-inch heart shapes. Refrigerate the hearts while you finish preparing the filling.

  4. Assemble the Hand Pies: Brush the edges of half of the hearts with the egg wash. Spoon a small amount of the chocolate filling onto the center of each egg-washed heart. Top with the remaining hearts and crimp the edges with a fork to seal. Brush the tops of the hand pies with the egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.

  5. Bake: Preheat the oven to 400°F. Bake the hand pies for 15-18 minutes, or until the edges are set and the pies are golden brown. Let them cool for about 10 minutes.

  6. Add the Drizzle: Melt the remaining semi-sweet chocolate with the oil in a microwave or on a stovetop. If using, stir in the peanut butter for an extra creamy drizzle. Drizzle the melted chocolate over the cooled hand pies.

  7. Serve and Enjoy: Once the chocolate drizzle has set, the pies are ready to serve! They’re perfect for sharing on Valentine’s Day or any day you want to treat yourself or a loved one.

Notes

  • Storage: These hand pies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. You can also refrigerate them for up to 1 week, though they’re best served fresh.
  • Make Ahead: The dough can be prepared a day ahead and kept chilled. The filling can also be made ahead and stored in the fridge.
  • Customizations: If you’re not a fan of peanut butter, simply omit it from the filling and drizzle. You can also experiment with different types of chocolate—milk chocolate or dark chocolate would work wonderfully as alternatives.
