Chicken Fried Steak is a classic Southern comfort dish with a crispy golden coating and tender, juicy beef. It’s perfectly paired with a creamy gravy for an indulgent, flavorful meal.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Steak:

  • 4 beef cube steaks (about 4 oz each)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

For the Gravy:

  • 1 cup milk (for gravy)
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (for gravy)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (optional for a creamier gravy)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Steaks:
    • Season the cube steaks with salt and pepper on both sides.
    • In a shallow dish, combine 2 cups flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, cayenne (if using), salt, and pepper.
    • In another shallow dish, whisk together the eggs and 1/4 cup milk.
  • Coat the Steaks:
    • Dredge each steak in the flour mixture, making sure it’s fully coated.
    • Dip the steak into the egg wash, then dredge it again in the flour mixture for a thick coating.
  • Fry the Steaks:
    • Heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Once the oil is hot, add the steaks, cooking 2-3 at a time. Fry for 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy.
    • Remove the steaks from the skillet and set them aside on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  • Make the Gravy:
    • In the same skillet with the leftover oil, reduce the heat to medium.
    • Add 1 tablespoon of flour to the skillet and whisk to combine with the oil and crumbs. Cook for 1 minute to form a roux.
    • Gradually add 1 cup of milk while stirring to avoid lumps. Continue whisking until the gravy thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
    • For a richer gravy, stir in the heavy cream.
    • Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Serve:
    • Serve the chicken-fried steak topped with the creamy gravy.

Notes

  • For extra heat, adjust the cayenne pepper to your taste.
  • You can make the gravy richer by adding heavy cream or keeping it lighter with just milk.
