Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined (fresh or frozen)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning (or to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 pre-made pie crust (or homemade if preferred)

Instructions

  • Cook the Shrimp: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the shrimp and cook for about 2-3 minutes per side, until they turn pink and opaque. Remove the shrimp from the skillet and set aside.
  • Make the Sauce: In the same skillet, add the diced onion and minced garlic. Cook for about 2 minutes, until softened. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and garlic, stirring constantly for about 1 minute to create a roux.
  • Add Milk and Cream: Slowly pour in the milk and heavy cream, whisking continuously until the mixture thickens and becomes smooth, about 3-4 minutes. Season with Old Bay seasoning, paprika, salt, and pepper to taste.
  • Combine Shrimp and Sauce: Return the cooked shrimp to the skillet. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and chopped parsley. Allow the cheese to melt into the sauce, making it creamy and flavorful.
  • Assemble the Pie: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Pour the shrimp mixture into the prepared pie crust, spreading it out evenly.
  • Bake: Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbly and set.
  • Serve & Enjoy: Let the pie cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy your Florida-inspired shrimp pie!

Notes

  • For a crispier crust, brush the edges of the pie crust with a bit of egg wash before baking.
  • If you prefer a bit of spice, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce to the sauce mixture.
  • This pie can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days, then reheated in the oven.
