Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons white granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon cream of tartar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup chilled salted butter
  • 2/3 cup milk

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 415°F (210°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium mixing bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, sugar, cream of tartar, and salt.
  • Cut in the Butter: Using a pastry blender, your hands, or a knife and fork, cut in the chilled butter until the flour resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Add Milk: Add the milk to the mixture and stir with a fork until the dough comes together.
  • Knead the Dough: On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough gently until smooth.
  • Roll and Cut: Roll out the dough until it’s ½ inch thick. Cut out dough using a 3-inch biscuit cutter, or you can cut it into squares. Reform and roll out any remaining dough and repeat until all the dough is used.
  • Bake: Arrange the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the biscuits have risen and are golden brown.
  • Serve: Serve the biscuits immediately, or let them sit on a counter or serving dish until ready to serve.

Notes

  • For extra flaky biscuits, make sure the butter is very cold when cutting it into the flour.
  • You can brush the biscuits with melted butter after baking for a more golden and flavorful finish.
  • To add a little sweetness, serve with honey or jam.
